South African Maritime Safety Authority

SAMSA (South African Maritime Safety Authority) govern all boating on South African waters and they also issue all skippers licences in our Country. SAMSA have made it easy for us to obtain a license specific to our needs by breaking the courses up into different categories.

This is the entry level for individuals wanting to operate a vessel of 9m or smaller with an engine larger than 15HP on inland waters: rivers, lakes, estuaries, lagoons, harbours or dams.

This course consists of three major components:

  • Practical skippering of 25 hours
  • Exam (consisting of a theory exam, practical exam and an oral exam)

Most people come on this course already having skippered a vessel for the necessary 25 hours.

If you wish to complete your practical experience under our expert guidance, please feel free contact us to discuss the costs and additional skippering hours needed.
